Phill Thomas

Phill has a long standing passion for all aspects of mountaineering. He spent 10 years consolidating his personal climbing before qualifying as mountain guide in 1979. Since then he has been actively involved in teaching and guiding parties in rock climbing, mountain walking, alpinism, ski mountaineering and trips to the greater ranges.

Personal and guiding trips have taken Phill to a wide range of venues across the world: Western and Eastern Europe, Siberia, Africa, South America, Canada, USA, Greenland the Himalaya and the Southern Alps of New Zealand. His passion for the mountains is unabated and so the list continues to grow. He greatly enjoys the company of others who love the mountain environment; even his immediate family are all mountaineers.

Phill spent 3.5 years working as a Development Officer for Mountain Leader Training, the body that administers all the mountaineering leadership awards within the UK. As such he has great knowledge of the training and assessment schemes. He is an authorised Provider of training and assessment courses for the majority of the schemes (ML, WGL, SPA & CWA) and has also worked as an assessor on Mountain Guide assessment courses. His work has also included acting as a technical advisor to a number of local authorities as well as private organisations.

Being adventurous at heart Phill’s interests in the outdoor world are wide. He has taken part in caving expeditions to Lechuguilla in New Mexico; without doubt the world’s most fantastic cave and Gouffre Berger in France; for a long time the deepest known cave. Two 18 day kayak descents of the Colorado River as it follows its wild path through the Grand Canyon are the most memorable river descents.

Phill has high ranking qualifications to coach his other activities:
Qualified Teacher
Kayak Coach Level 4
Cave Instructor Certificate
Senior Instructor Dinghy Sailing – to name a few.

Phill is interested in any mountaineering or other adventurous projects that clients may wish to indulge in and he is eager to help achieve them.
