Tangent Led/Guided Expeditions

All transportation costs of Tangent provided expedition group equipment from the UK to base camp are included in the cost. This also includes the cost of sending tents for clients who are providing their own tent but who wish to send it in advance. Clients can also send out any other items of personal equipment in advance such as ski equipment, boots, ice axes, crampons, helmets and harnesses if they wish to reduce the amount of baggage that they carry with them on their international flights. There is a £10 per kg one way charge for this, which includes all charges from our Tangent store in the UK to the final destination in Iceland or Greenland where it is put onboard the aircraft for the final flight to base camp. If you envisage going over the standard 20kg+ 5kg hand luggage allowances on regular flights then this will certainly be a cheaper way of transporting the excess than carrying it with you on the day. However you will need to factor in the cost of sending it to our office if you are unable to deliver it to us in person. Normally the total excess baggage charges on regular schedule flights from the UK to either Akureyri or Isafjørdur in north Iceland, or to Kulusuk or Constable Point airports in east Greenland, will exceed £18 per kg. Such items should normally be delivered to us no later than 8 weeks prior to your expedition start date but please contact our office for exact dates. Clients may also return equipment by freight at the same rate of £10 per kg one way. Due to space restrictions at our store we request that individual clients collect their equipment no later than 4 weeks from their arrival date back in the UK otherwise a charge of £1 per day will be payable.

Independent/Non-/Guided Groups

All transportation costs of food and equipment from the UK to base camp are included in the all inclusive logistics package price. The total weight should not exceed 50kg per person. Clients may also return personal equipment by freight at the same rate of £10 per kg one way. The return freight allowance for group equipment is 25kg per person, which is included in the package price. Due to space restrictions at our store we request that groups collect their equipment no later than 4 weeks from their arrival date back in the UK otherwise a charge of £2 per week per 10kg will be payable after this period.

Packaging

Individuals on Tangent guided expeditions can deliver their equipment in any format as we will repackage it within our own freight containers before disbursement from the UK. If you have several items of equipment then of course an expedition suitable rucksack or hold all bag is preferred. If sending skis then all items can be included in the ski bag. Any items or bags should be clearly labelled with your name and contact details. Independent groups should package their equipment in sturdy plastic containers or blue expedition barrels where possible. Sturdy expedition rucksacks and hold all bags are also acceptable. Plastic containers should be well sealed with strong tape. Where possible try to minimise the total number of individual items of freight, for example by double packing two sets of skis and poles into one ski bag. No individual item should weigh more than 50kg but there are no size restrictions.
Food is best packed in hold all bags or sturdy double wall cardboard boxes. This is so that the boxes can be discarded at the end of the expedition and therefore reduce the volume (and cost) of the returning freight. Likewise hold all bags will compress to take up less space when being returned. Barrels are not ideal for food as these will return empty but be charged on volume as if full, thus increasing your costs. The package price will assume food will not be packed in barrels, otherwise a surcharge will be applied.

Weight Allowance

50kg per person for independent groups, included in the package price, and 25kg per person return freight. Excess above this will be charged at £10 per kg each way. For Tangent clients sending personal items out in advance (see above) there is a charge of £10 per kg one way. Tents for Tangent clients can be sent out free of charge. Skis for Tangent clients should be taken out with you but can also be sent in advance at £10 per kg one way.

Prices

Tangent all inclusive package prices include all freight charges. Tangent is also a freight forwarding specialist for Greenland and groups requiring more limited logistics services should contact our office for freight only prices for a specific consignment. Freight forwarding to Greenland is a complex process which requires in depth knowledge of local conditions and experienced people on the ground in country. Most regular freight forwarders do not have this experience and your freight is often neglected once ‘in the system’. There is no substitute for having a dedicated person from Tangent handling all aspects of our consignment at all stages of its journey. Many an expedition that has not heeded this advice has arrived in Greenland to find their equipment has not arrived, some having even had to cancel their expedition as a result.
